Playing better in 2021: Retail​

In retail as in life, the phrase “adapt or perish” applies. The coronavirus has accelerated consumers’ preferences and even demands, launching the industry years into the future. The question for retailers is: who’s ready to make that time travel journey?

  • Convenience is everything: Buyers preference for convenience was accelerated by the pandemic and is not expected to go away. Retailers are keeping up by improving online ordering, with in-store and curbside pickup. This increased convenience will be critical in 2021.​
  • Make the mall matter again: As traditional retail vacancies increase, alternative uses including office, industrial, residential and medical will be needed to restore relevance. ​
  • Take the longview: Urban retail demand is expected to return at the end of 2021.
