Current responsibilities
As Market Director and Chief Operating Officer for the New York City/Tri-State Operations of JLL, Stephen Schlegel is responsible for operations of all of the firm’s Markets businesses in the New York, New Jersey, Connecticut/Westchester and Long Island markets, including its agency leasing, tenant representation, property management, project management, capital markets, retail, industrial and government/public sector practices. Mr. Schlegel has responsibility for a business that currently totals approximately $450 million in total revenue, has 250 million s.f. under management, and employs in excess of 2,000 professionals. His primary responsibility is to develop and implement a strategic plan to grow revenue and market share for all service lines of JLL in the Tri-State Region, and to ensure profitability across all the service lines and markets. In addition to internal organizational tactics to achieve the firm’s growth objectives in the region, Mr. Schlegel has led significant acquisition and external recruiting efforts for all service lines. Since 2005, JLL’s Tri-State business has experienced a ten-fold increase in revenue and profit, and has won and executed some of the region’s most iconic projects. Mr. Schlegel is also responsible for developing operating procedures for the Tri-State operation, direct personnel management of service line and market leaders across the region, and maintaining the budget, financial reporting and compliance required of a public company.
Experience
Prior to assuming his current role in 2004, Mr. Schlegel served as Chief Operating Officer for the Leasing & Management Group of Jones Lang LaSalle. In that role, he oversaw property management, agency leasing and construction for a portfolio of approximately 135 million s.f. in over 50 markets across the country, and was responsible for personnel management of nearly 600 professionals. Prior to assuming the COO role, Mr. Schlegel was the General Manager and Director of Leasing for the State Street Bank Building project in Boston, MA for JLL. In that role, Mr. Schlegel was responsible for the leasing, property management and an $80mm renovation/asbestos removal project for the 1-million-s.f. office tower.
Prior to joining JLL, Mr. Schlegel was employed by Chemical Bank in the merchant banking group and served as a lender/investor to start-up technology companies at the Bank of Boston.
Education and affiliations
Mr. Schlegel earned a master’s degree in Business Administration from Harvard University and a bachelor’s degree in Finance and Economics from Boston College.
