John F. Oates serves as a Managing Director for the JLL Valuation Advisory business. He is part of the infrastructure practice specializing as a senior valuation advisor and business development generator for the renewable energy practice. The renewable energy practices focuses its expertise on the valuation of solar, wind, geothermal, battery, carbon sequestration, hydroelectric, gas-fired cogeneration, and nuclear assets. This work is done for sale/leasebacks, tax partnerships, end of transactions purposes and cost segregation transactions.
Prior to joining JLL, John has spent over 50 years in the appraisal business. He entered the business in 1972, learning the machinery and equipment and real estate valuation business. After obtaining his MBA, he transitioned to performing business valuations. In 1982 after joining Marshall & Stevens, he was one of the founding members of the sales/leaseback team, where they pioneered the valuation of assets, automobile facilities, oil refineries, steel mills, electric generation, semiconductors, and various other assets for tax and accounting issues. After a brief time at American Appraisal, he moved to New York, where he brought his expertise to Deloitte as a Director. There he led and performed similar appraisals but also branched out to valuing infrastructure assets in Europe, Canada, Mexico, Japan, and Australia for tax and accounting purposes.
After leaving Deloitte, he eventually returned to Marshall & Stevens, where he revived the Leasing practice and developed the renewable energy practice with the focus on solar, wind, geothermal, nuclear, and batteries. He is considered a leading expert in the valuation of assets for sale/leaseback and tax equity partnership transactions.
