Historic Spokane property comes to market

Nineteenth century mining magnate Patsy Clark’s mansion has been a bed and breakfast, restaurant, event space and law office in Spokane, Washington

SPOKANE, WA , July 22, 2019 – The Patsy Clark Mansion, a nineteenth century architectural gem built in Spokane’s historic Browne’s Addition neighborhood in 1889, may change hands for the first time in more than 17 years. Current owners, the law firm of Eymann Allison Hunter Jones, have engaged Michael Sharapata of JLL to market the 130-year old mixed-use property they purchased in 2002.

“This is a truly unique, architecturally significant property that has been lovingly and diligently preserved by its current owners,” said Sharapata. “The opportunity to own a property like the Clark Mansion does not come along often and we expect this offering to appeal to a wide range of buyers because of its excellent condition, location, historical significance and the potential to add value,” he added.

The property, located at 2208 W 2nd Avenue next to downtown Spokane, includes the 11,422 square foot main house; an adjacent 4,691 square foot carriage house, now used for storage but with the potential for conversion to creative office space or residences; and a similarly sized two-story duplex, originally built in 1889 as an in-law unit and converted into two rental units. In the past, the property has been used as a home, a bed and breakfast, a restaurant and, most recently as event space and a law office. Those uses are all potentially possible, as is additional residential, art or historic gallery space, creative office or nonprofit use.

“Patsy Clark built an architectural masterpiece to stand for the ages, one that’s been deeply embedded in the fabric of the northwest for decades.  At least two Presidents (Theodore Roosevelt and George HW Bush) have visited, along with U.S. Senators, members of Congress, and dignitaries, as well as generations of residents of Spokane. We have decided to begin the process of passing the mantle now, because this building deserves only the most dedicated and thoughtful owners,” said co-owner John Allison.

Patrick “Patsy” Clark emigrated from Ireland in 1872 and after learning the business at mines in California, Montana, Utah and Nevada, moved to Spokane where he opened up the Poor Man mine in the Coeur D’Alene district in 1887. By 1889 he had made his fortune and commissioned architect Kirtland Cutter, who later designed Seattle’s Rainier Club, Lake McDonald Lodge in Glacier National Park and the Idaho Building at Chicago’s World’s Fair in 1893, to design a new mansion for his family.

The three-and-a-half story mansion remains one of Spokane’s most well known and luxurious buildings and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Each of the mansion’s first floor rooms has a theme and the building is filled with original furnishings, antiques and art, many procured by Cutter on travels around the world while the mansion was under construction. They include several found only in this property, such as the master staircase’s ‘opaline’ lamps made from crushed opals, and the 18-foot Louis Comfort Tiffany-designed stained glass window, believed to be the largest residential example of a Tiffany window in existence.
