Following its acquisition by Tempur-Sealy International, Sleep Outfitters embarked on an ambitious journey to redevelop its brand, remodel its stores to support the brand experience, and expand its footprint. As the unique retailer set its plan in motion, it recognized the need for a dedicated program management team to help expand its one-of-a-kind mattress shopping experience within their current markets.
Sleep Outfitters engaged JLL to manage its retail construction program, including the construction of its 9,368-square-foot multi-branded flagship store in Lexington, KY, which will serve as a regional sales training center and highest expression of the brand. The program plan includes 88 remodels and buildout of approximately 10 to 20 new stores annually.
From the start, the program management team sought to balance Sleep Outfitters’ goal of providing a unique setting for experiential shopping and brand expression while staying within budget. By bringing in quality vendor partners through its Synergy supplier program, JLL helped the retailer achieve savings of more than $10,000 per site on fixtures alone.
The team faced challenges during a pandemic, including a sparse labor market and materials shortage. Despite the hurdles, the plan is on track to achieve Sleep Outfitters’ program goals.
At the end of the program’s first year, eleven store remodels are underway and work has begun on three outlet stores. The new flagship location is complete, allowing new Outfitters to begin their training and bring a better night’s sleep to Sleep Outfitters’ guests.
