St. Louis ranks first for women starting new businesses

- Seek Business Capital recently published an article titled “Cities With The Most Female Entrepreneurs”. St. Louis ranked at the top of that list and by a wide margin. 45.2% of all startups in St. Louis were female owned. The next closest city was Austin, TX with 32.7%. Several other midwestern cities faired well with Kansas City and Indianapolis both making an appearance in the top 10. The article reports that St. Louis has 2,726 female-owned startups with roughly 6,257 employees. Gross sales for these startups are estimated to be between $150 million to $500 million. Healthcare and social assistance are the most active industries for female-owned startups in St. Louis and nationally. The next most active industry was educational services while agriculture and construction were the least active industries.
- According to the St. Louis Business Journal the largest female-owned business as of August 2018 was Medical Transportation Management, Inc. with 482 local employees and $522 million in annual revenue.
