San Diego high-tech employment keeps shining
San Diego’s high-tech employment in the private establishment sector recently had its all time high of number of employees at 66,064 in addition to its highest year-over-year increase of nearly 6% from 2016 to 2017.
- San Diego’s high-tech employment in the private establishment sector recently had its all time high of number of employees at 66,064 in addition to its highest year-over-year increase of nearly 6% from 2016 to 2017. Bulk of the high-tech jobs are both currently in the computer product manufacturing and computer systems design industries with a combined total of 48,992, which is 81.6% of the total high tech jobs. The two largest high tech employee industries increases since 2001 belong to other information services at 549% and electronic shopping at 694%. Both the other information services and electronic shopping growth is due to the rapid growth of technology industries related to operating web search engines on the internet as well as e-commerce.
- Since 2014 high-tech establishments have grown the number of employees by 15.6%, being a crucial impact to the growth in the innovation sector. Another key indicator that high-tech employment growth will continue is through another robust year of venture capital funding allowing local companies to expand. San Diego is on pace to reach over another billion dollars for a second year in a row for technology investments. Defense, software, and general technology combined represented 32% of the office leasing in 2018, being a good sign for more high-tech jobs to continue to increase for the foreseeable future.
