  • According to GoBankingRates, Portland was ranked the #1 big city in the US to start a business. The study looks at the business tax climate, the percentage rate of startup growth, the percentage rate of new entrepreneurs and state and local sales tax rates.
  • No state and local sales taxes, plus ranking second for its business tax climate, cemented the #1 spot on this years list.
  • Although Portland’s rate of new entrepreneurs wasn’t eye-catching at 0.26 percent, Portland’s overall startup growth rate was an impressive 94 percent as measured by the Kauffman’s Index Growth Entrepreneurship data table which shows the percentage rate of startup growth, ranking Portland #3 overall.
  • The study noted the importance of being home to the original chapter of Zebras Unite, a group that assists startups in acquiring funds other than through traditional means such as venture capital, equity investments, profit based loans etc.
