MTA makes record investment in New York’s regional transportation system

1,900 new subway cars will be added to the MTA inventory, which will help decrease delays by up to 10%.

  • 1,900 new subway cars will be added to the MTA inventory, which will help decrease delays by up to 10%. $7.1 billion will be spent to modernize the Subway signaling system and $2.6 billion will be allocated to replace old rail and lay new track, improving safety and efficiency. 
  • $10.4 billion will be spent improving and expanding the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad: funding the East Side Access project, creating a new route to grant Metro-North commuters direct access to Penn Station, and adding 160 new electric cars to the LIRR and replacing 140 Metro-North cars.
  • The MTA will add 175 additional buses to the fleet, replace 39% of the current inventory with newer and more efficient buses, and spend $1.1 billion adding electric buses to the system.
