Portland has the most bike commuters in the nation
- An estimated 22,647 Portlanders biked to work in 2017, which is roughly 6.3 percent of workers 16 and over, the most in the top 50 most populous U.S. cities. Nationally only 0.5 percent of commuters use a bicycle to get to work.
- No matter which ranking system you look at, Portland is consistently ranked in the top 5 for cities to bike in and the city is the only large American city to receive a Platinum rating by The League Of American Bicyclists.
- Portland has 350 miles of bike paths, lanes and neighborhood greenways and another 50 more miles is funded to be installed in the next few years. In 2010 the city adopted the ‘Portland Bicycle Plan for 2030’ which aims to complete 962 miles of bicycle infrastructure by 2030.
- Portland doesn’t fair to badly either when it comes to the use of public transport to get to work. 12.6 percent of workers use public transit, that’s the 11th highest of the top 50 metros.
