Mall performance is up, driven by a comeback in regional mall absorption. Net absorption for malls for the nation soared in the fourth quarter, totaling approximately 1.0 million square feet. Mall space vacated fell 40.0 percent from a year ago. This drop in move-outs is most likely because department store closures fell by almost half from the same period in 2018. Landlords are also focusing on adding services and experience to shopping centers. Service retailers for the first time overtake retailers selling products and restaurant counts grew by 30.9 percent from 2002 to 2017. Read more….
