This International Women’s Day and every day, we are proud to recognize our inspiring women leaders and allies at JLL.
Who is a female inspiration/role model to you and why?
I have many female role models and sources of inspiration. However, currently I am inspired by Layla Saad. Her book, “me and white supremacy,” has been transformational for me. Her work has forced me to look at feminism and women empowerment through the lens of white supremacy. It’s uncomfortable but important work, and I am thankful that she is unapologetically confronting the oppressive systems of white supremacy and patriarchy, while offering important teachings and tools for transforming consciousness, cultivating a personal anti-racism practice and taking responsibility for our individual and collective healing. I never knew that there was such as a thing as “white feminism” and now I do. If you know better, you can do better.
Why does inclusion matter to you?
An inclusive culture changes the way people show up. I have experienced first-hand how an inclusive and psychologically safe space engages people and can result in more innovative, forward-thinking ideas. I have also seen how the lack of inclusivity can shut people down. I think we need to be aware of how creating an inclusive culture may not feel comfortable. But our comfort is not the point.
How are you inspiring women to achieve their ambitions at JLL?
I try to inspire in two ways: first, remove the constraints and obstacles that prevent them from achieving their ambitions (policies, pay equity, etc.); and second, empower and trust them while advocating for their advancement and equality.
