Limited impact of retail closings on real estate market

Store closings appear to be at a cyclical high, but the unbroken chain of positive net absorption retail has seen since 2009 rolled on into Q3. Q2 asking rents rose by 1.3 percent (QoQ) and the year’s first half saw retail absorption combined to total 49.6 million square feet. Department store closings remain the Achilles heel for malls, though most are seeing ample demand for the new use of that space.
