Changes coming to St. Louis’ largest companies

•The landscape of the largest public companies in St. Louis is going to look very different in a year. Express Scripts, which has held the top spot for the past four years, is currently set to be acquired by Cigna. Monsanto, the number six company, was acquired on June 7 by Bayer out of Germany. The good news for St. Louis is that both Cigna and Bayer have said publicly that St. Louis will maintain a strong presence for both companies. Bayer is planning to move its North American Commercial and Seeds and Traits divisions from the Research Triangle in North Carolina to St. Louis. Express Scripts will continue to operate independently in Northwest County where it occupies several office buildings near the airport.

•Centene has been moving up the list quickly, climbing from six to three in just four years. The Clayton-based company has been growing across the region and has its second office tower in Clayton under construction.
