Online retailers prefer New York City – by far – as site of first permanent physical location

According to a JLL National Retail report titled “From Screens to Stores”, New York proved to be the most popular first permanent location for the 51 surveyed e-tailers, with 3X as many companies choosing New York compared to the cities with the next highest totals.

Apparel brands comprise over half (54.9 percent) of all “clicks-to-bricks” retailers.

E-tailers such as Warby Parker, Rent the Runway, and Bonobos all opened their first physical locations in New York.

Establishing permanent physical locations is the second phase of what is typically a four-phase store rollout campaign for online retailers; experimenting with pop-up stores in various locations occurs in the first phase.
