SoCal drayage rates up significantly over last year

• Across Southern California markets, drayage costs escalated by 12.0 – 19.0 percent  per container. LA Central saw the biggest jump, where costs rose by 19.0 percent year-over-year.

• Crude oil prices have risen by 40.0% over the past 12 months due to the combination of increased consumption and production cuts from OPEC. And the new state gas tax kicked in at the end of 2017, bumping diesel by 20 cents per gallon.

• Additionally, many of the accessorial drayage charges increased. For example, pre-pull—temporarily storing containers at a trucking yard rather than immediate delivery—costs rose from $85 to $150.  Drayage rates will likely climb through 2018 as trucking companies continue to deal with driver shortages and congested
marine terminals.
