Can you afford to buy a home in the Bay Area?

  • With for-sale housing costs that are among the most expensive in the nation, the cost of housing is a challenge for Bay Area residents and the businesses that want to hire them. In San Francisco and San Mateo counties, a household needs income of about $300,000 a year to afford the $1.5 million median existing home price.

  • High prices are causing residents to turn to the East Bay, where home prices are comparatively more affordable. Costs in the East Bay have risen in recent years, but prices in some East Bay cities are about half the level of San Francisco, requiring a significantly lower income to afford.
