Despite shrinking overall population, Baltimore City outpacing suburbs in growth rate of educated residents

• While Baltimore City’s overall population has dropped in recent years, the ranks of bachelor’s educated and higher residents has risen at an increasing rate that has outpaced Baltimore’s suburbs. Since 2010, Baltimore City has added 23,228 college educated residents over 25 years old, which is a 22.8 percent increase. Growth in the suburbs has continued at a steady clip, albeit at a slower rate than the city.

• Educational attainment rates in Baltimore City have jumped as a result of the aforementioned growth. For residents 25 years and older, the percentage holding a bachelor’s degree has increased by 450 basis points since 2010 to 29.7 percent. The trend has helped shrink the gap in demographics between the city and suburbs.

• Baltimore City’s growing talented labor pool has helped drive demand for multi-family development, and will help make the city increasingly attractive to office users seeking to attract and retain employees.
