Video game hardware imports in Washington State on the rise in 2017, regional gaming industry employment strong

  • ​Washington State saw a 334 percent increase in video game hardware imports between 2016 and 2017. Import values in 2017 were $1.8 billion and accounted for 3.7 percent of state-wide import value in 2017. Video game hardware was the fifth most valuable import commodity in 2017. Gaming hardware exports originating in Washington State were also up 181 percent over the last year.

  • In 2015 the interactive media industry, anchored by the video game industry, supported more than 94,000 direct and indirect jobs in Washington State, generating over $28 billion in revenue and $7.6 billion in labor income.

  • The Puget Sound market  is home to over 400 gaming companies with a concentration of gaming offices located in the Eastside submarket, particularly Bellevue, Redmond, and Kirkland. Notable companies in the region include Nintendo, Sony, Big Fish, PopCap, Valve, Sucker Punch Productions, and Bungie. There are currently around 500 job openings listed for the gaming industry in the greater Seattle area.

  • Based on the video game industry’s strong 2017, Digi-Capital expects continued growth in  game software and hardware through 2022, particularly in mobile games, pc game hardware, and online pc games. As one of the leading markets for the video game industry, the Puget Sound region is likely to see a share of this growth.
