Taxable retail sales up 5.5% year over year in Seattle, growth declining

• Taxable retail sales grew $1.31 billion in the City of Seattle from Q3 2016 to Q3 2017. This represents a 5.5% year over year increase and the fifth straight year of at least $1 billion in growth.

• Overall taxable retail sales growth is on the decline with a 4.2% drop from 2016 and 6.9% decrease from 2015. In fact, $1.31 billion represents the smallest net increase since 2013.

• Commercial and Institutional Building Construction leads all retail segments with a net increase of $159 million year over year. A further testament to the momentum of real estate in Seattle, 5 additional real estate developer/contractor services cracked the top 20.

• The hospitality sector is benefitting from Seattle’s tourism boom with Hotels/Motels and Travel Arraignments/Reservation Services both placing top 5 overall with $86.4 and $67.8 million in additional sales respectively.
