Port of Portland #1 for auto exports on US West Coast

• In 2017 the Port of Portland was the lead automobile exporter on the West Coast for the first time since 2003. The combined auto exports and imports in 2017 totaled 314,000 automobiles, a 7.8 percent increase from 2016; highlighting the growth of interest in Asia for American-made cars.

• Over 11 million automobiles have been imported and exported out of the Port of Portland since 1953 when Volkswagen imported automobiles through Terminal 1.

• In comparison to a nearby Port, the Northwest Seaport Alliance (Ports of Seattle & Tacoma) imported/exported 146,885 automobiles in 2017.

• Locally, this has translated into 600 jobs for dockworkers, processors, etc. US manufactured cars are assembled and shipped by train to Portland where they are driven onto ships bound for China and other parts of Asia. Imported automobiles are unloaded and distributed to dealerships across the West Coast.
