San Francisco, Oakland lead Bay Area in new residential construction for 2017

  • The pace of new residential construction is ramping up in parts of the Bay Area. San Francisco and Oakland led the Bay Area in residential permits issued for both single and multifamily projects in 2017. Residential permit activity totaled 4,254 in San Francisco and 3,501 in Oakland. At the same time, fewer than 250 units were permitted in most Mid-Peninsula cities.

  • Trulia compared 2017 permit activity to the historical average since 1980, and San Francisco, with a historical average of 3,221 units, ranked first nationally in new housing construction permits relative to its historical average.

  • These increasing levels of new construction will provide much needed housing, but are unlikely to make a dent in the Bay Area’s supply/demand housing imbalance.

  • The location of the residential construction also provides food for thought in terms of where Bay Area people will live and work in the future.
