New Jersey employment gains show uneven growth

•After adding 81,500 jobs in 2015, New Jersey employers created only 13,600 jobs one year later.

•Fluctuating monthly swings between gains and losses effectively kept employment growth in check during 2016. The state’s unemployment rate finished the year at 4.7 percent compared to 4.6 percent in 2015.

•Furthermore, professional/business services, one of the key drivers of office demand, was the only sector to post job losses in 2016. The lack of growth in this vital segment had overshadowed the office market’s recovery.
