Puerto Rican migration to Central Florida increases

  • According to Orange County Public School enrollment records, 3,380 more Hispanic students were enrolled in the Orange County school system in September of 2017 than September of 2016. From September 2017 to February 2018, 3,850 new Hispanic students were enrolled in the school system. So while the increase in Hispanic students is normal, the hurricane has accelerated the growth.

  • While there is no precise record of total migration increases, assuming that the migrants from PR are of roughly the same age distribution as on the Island (20.4 percent of PR population is under 18 as of 2016), the imputed estimate of new arrivals to Orange County would be around 18,872 new people, based on enrollment increases.

  • Only Orange County publicly reports enrollment data every two weeks with a breakdown by Federal race category, but other counties in Central Florida are doubtless affected.
