Orange County experiences its lowest unemployment rate in almost 20 years

  • As of December 2017, Orange County’s unemployment rate is among the lowest in the nation and reaches a record-low in almost 20 years. In the face of a tightening labor market, job growth still managed a positive 12-month net increase of 1.4 percent with the addition of 21,800 jobs.

  • The leisure and hospitality sector accounts for the majority of this year-over gain with the addition of 9,800 jobs. Following this gain is the professional and business services sector which grew by 7,800 jobs.

  • Nationally, 2017 employment growth reached almost 2.1 million jobs. Job creation was certainly stable, but fell below expectations to end the year. Still, the combination of widespread positive fundamentals, from consumer spending to business investment, is keeping an optimistic outlook for 2018.
