Fast food and family dinners rule restaurant spending across America’s largest metropolitan areas

  • Not surprisingly, Philadelphia’s emergence as a foodie paradise has contributed to the growth of the restaurant sector, with hundreds of new restaurants opening on an annual basis.  Since 2013, 482 restaurants have opened in the Philadelphia region.
  • According to ESRI, nationwide, consumers have shown a strong preference for fast food and family restaurants, with nearly 90% of the top 10 metros spending in those restaurants in the last six months. Nearly a third of the local MSA population has spent less than $51 in the last six months at fast food restaurants while one-fifth of the local population has spent over $100 at fast food restaurants. That’s a lot of fast food!
  • As city dwellers increasingly opt for fast casual take-out in Philadelphia, landlords might consider putting a full-court press on these hip, new, experience-driven shops to liven the street presence of their buildings.
