Building permits make a comeback

•While not approaching the record levels of 2004 and 2005, building permits in St. Louis have increased for the past five years. Since bottoming out in 2011, total permits have risen 80.2 percent. Multi-family development had led the charge increasing 133.2 percent, topping 2,000 units three years in a row. Single family permits have lagged, growing at just half the multi-family pace.

•The return of building permits is aiding the employment in the construction industry. While still down 23.6 percent from its 2007 peak, annual employment has been up four years in a row.

•In addition to a rising housing stock, the region is seeing record breaking industrial construction, more than six million square feet delivered in 2016 and over two million square feet is under construction.
