Are tech jobs and breweries in cahoots?

  • With over 150 licensed breweries across the county, it is no secret that San Diego is known for its craft beer.
  • The pioneers of the San Diego craft beer industry, such as Stone, Ballast Point, and Karl Strauss have attracted technology companies that have located near their tasting rooms and breweries. Many of the breweries/tasting rooms have occupied the industrial and flexible warehouse sector of Miramar, which is only steps away from the Sorrento Valley/Mesa technology hubs.
  • Downtown, Central, and North County West markets have the most concentration of breweries in the county, while the I-15 corridor has been relatively untapped with breweries (no pun intended) with its highest concentration of tech workers in that region.
  • San Diego leads the state of California by a large margin with 173 small beer manufacturing licenses for 2017; the next closest is Los Angeles with 83 followed by Orange County at 53.
  • Software and engineering jobs have increased 19 percent in the last five years, with tech firms spreading across Downtown, Del Mar Heights, and the 1-15 Corridor.
