Three Indiana metros have large share of STEM degrees

  • People in Indy love to tout the quality of tech talent available for companies to hire in-state, but now the proof is in the pudding! According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Indiana has three of the Top-20 metros in terms of the share of bachelors degrees that are in STEM fields. Michigan is the only other state to have multiple metros make the list.
  • Columbus is second in the nation at 41.6 percent. Kokomo ranks fifth (31.1 percent) and Lafayette/West Lafayette just misses the top-15 coming in at sixteenth (27.9 percent). In comparison, the Indianapolis MSA accounts for 23.7 percent (which still ranks well inside the Top-100 at 80th).
  • With such a large share of college-educated people being in STEM fields, it is no surprise that Indiana and its capital city are attracting tech companies, including ones from these MSA’s. Columbus-based Cummins opened its new Distribution Headquarters in Indianapolis this year. Purdue University (located in West Lafayette) also has several outposts in Indy, including a brand new, STEM-focused high school currently in its first year.
