With growing tech workforce, Baltimore ranks competitively on STEM degree concentration

  • ​For markets with over 50,000 tech workers, Baltimore ranks 6th nationally for its share of bachelor’s degrees in STEM fields. At 25%, Baltimore falls narrowly behind San Francisco, and ahead of several major tech markets, including Dallas and Boston. Baltimore’s high concentration in STEM fields has supported the markets tech growth and competitiveness.
  • Baltimore’s tech employment has grown significantly over the past 5 years, up 25.6% to 62,290 workers. Cybersecurity and Fort Meade in the southern suburbs have driven growth in tech employment, along with a maturing tech community in Baltimore City.
  • Earlier this month, Tenable, a fast-growing cybersecurity firm, announced they will be nearly doubling in size from their current HQ in Columbia Gateway to 150,000 s.f. of new construction in Downtown Columbia. The tech firm plans to add hundreds of employees in their expansion.
  • Tech tenants will play an increasingly important role in office leasing and occupancy as the cybersecurity field evolves along with the rest of Baltimore’s tech community.​
