Florida airports lead the way for affordability

  • In a recent report analyzing which airports are the least costly, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood international ranks first among the 45 busiest domestic airports. The airports were scored based on four elements: transportation to and from the airport, plane ticket prices, amenities and food. The airport scored a 87.7 out of 100, while two other Florida airports scored in the top 10 as well. In aggregate, these Florida airports service 43.7 million passengers annually, a number that has increased nearly 20.0 percent over the previous 10 years.
  • All three airports are solid economic engines for their respective markets, and all have undergone renovations to increase flight capacity, safety, and efficiency while remaining wallet friendly.
  • One major factor contributing to the affordability of these airports is the prevalence of low-cost airlines with a hub (or focus city) located in at least one these destinations such as Jet Blue Airline, Spirit Airlines, Silver Airways, Allegiant Air, Frontier Airlines and Southwest Airlines. Florida’s busiest airport, Miami International Airport (12th busiest in the nation) ranked 25th on the list for affordability.
