Despite tech, education and health concentrations, employment is more diverse than New York and DC

  • ​Boston offers a diverse array of industries, with the highest volume of employment in Education/Health and Professional Services, which encompasses Boston’s strong technology industry.
  • Boston has seen some consolidation over the past 10 years in the knowledge-intensive industries, growing from 66.4 percent to 69.6 percent share of employment in key sectors.
  • Despite this seemingly high concentration, in comparison to East Coast counterparts, New York and DC, Boston offers the most diversified employment base.
  • DC has highest employment volumes in Government and Professional Services, and New York in Education/Health and Professional Services, similar to Boston. ​
