Books and home furnishings most impacted by e-commerce

  • According to a recently released JLL Retail Research report entitled “Bagged or Boxed: The Future of 13 Retail Categories”, books and other gifts is the category most heavily affected by the impact of e-commerce, with online transactions accounting for 24.6 percent of their 2016 revenue.
  • The report studied this phenomenon by analyzing consumer opinion data, store closure statistics, same-store sales growth, and e-commerce penetration, and concluded that different product categories will shift online at different rates and levels.
  • Restaurants and discount retailers are projected to retain the bulk of their sales in physical storefronts, while office supplies, books, and electronics are expected to shift almost entirely online.​
