Container volume for Port of Baltimore reaches new record at beginning of 2017

The trailing 12-month container volume  for the Port of Baltimore rose by 4.6 percent in January to a record high 951,143 TEUs, albeit at a slower pace than previously experienced from 2015 through mid-2016.

While nearly doubling since 2000, the Port of Baltimore still lags significantly behind other East Coast ports in TEU volume. The Port of Virginia handled nearly 2.7 million TEUs in 2016.

While container traffic has posted impressive gains, the bulk of growth at the Port of Baltimore has come from Roll-on/Roll-off cargo. The Port of Baltimore is the leading auto port in the US, with a volume of 567,895 cars in 2016.
