Where are Americans moving? Seattle, first and foremost

  • Seattle is the most popular destination city for Americans to move to, according to a recent report that surveyed peak moving season. Most move-outs occurred from metro cities located on the East Coast.
  • A recent Census Bureau analysis shows that Portland, Los Angeles, and San Francisco were the cities that sent the largest share of new residents to the Seattle metro. 12.3 percent of new residents came from in-state and 20.2 percent were from outside the U.S.
  • With a net gain of 21,000 people, Seattle is one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S. Its diverse economy, along with a high concentration of tech jobs, is bringing people from other parts of the country. Puget Sound job growth is projected to be 2.5 percent in 2017, so newcomers should continue to flock to the area to take advantage of the opportunities.
