Arizona tourism generates record $21.2 billion in 2016

  • ​In 2016, approximately 43 million people visited Arizona spending a record $21.2 billion in the state. The Phoenix MSA accounted for more than 65.5 percent, or $13.9 billion, of all spending in Arizona. With an estimated Gross Domestic Product of $9.2 billion, tourism is the number one export industry in the state.
  • Spending in Food Service (20.7 percent), Accommodations (16.5 percent) and Local Transportation & Gas (13.7 percent) by visitors accounted for more than half of all commodities purchased in 2016. 
  • Travel spending in Arizona supported approximately 184,200 direct jobs in 2016, which generated nearly $6.5 billion in earnings for workers. Tourism supported 108,100 direct jobs in Metro Phoenix alone, generating $4.5 billion in wages and salaries. In addition, visitors generated nearly $3.1 billion tax revenues for federal, state and local governments in 2016.
