Phoenix job growth led by office using workers

  • With 1,984,700 workers as of June 2017, the employment base in Phoenix has grown nearly 44 percent in the past 20 years and more than quadrupled over the last 40 years. Phoenix’s robust employment growth is due in part to the area’s exceptional quality of life, moderate climate and pro-business mentality.
  • Over the past 20 years, large employment gains in the Educational & Health Services, Financial Activities and Professional & Business Services have resulted in a major shift in the Phoenix economy. These mainly white-collar sectors have created more than 372,000 jobs over the past two decades, accounting for nearly 62 percent of the 602,300 jobs created since 1997.
  • Leading all sectors in job creation, Educational & Health Services has more than doubled over last 20 years. It has grown from 125,100 workers in 1997 to nearly 298,000 workers as of June 2017, or 138.1 percent.
