NYC ranks second in funding for the life sciences

  • According to the local Economic Development Corporation, New York City is home to one of the nation’s largest concentrations of medical centers, research foundations and academic institutions. Industry giants like Roche, Pfizer, and Eli Lilly have also established footprints in the city, and the BLS estimates that more than 1,000 other life sciences companies are located throughout the New York area.
  • New York City’s rich life sciences foundation and dynamic talent pool have attracted funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In 2016, it received $1.63 billion in NIH funding, second only to the Greater Boston area.
  • The local government has also launched LifeSciNYC, an initiative that will allocate $100 million towards the creation of an applied life sciences campus.
