Retail has four out of ten job-losing subsectors in the US over last 12 months

  • As technology and automation becomes more popular, some subsectors of employment are losing jobs to the advances. From 2016-2017, the retail sector in particular had several subsectors lose jobs to automation.
  • The job-losing subsectors perfectly aligned with national retail brick and mortar closures. This trend was validated in Los Angeles with the closure of four Macy’s (Department Stores), five Sports Authorities (Sport stores), five RadioShacks(Electronic stores), and 13 Payless Shoes (Apparel stores).
  • While most jobs are destined to be affected by automation and artificial intelligence, the technological advances will be used to focus on specific tasks rather than the entire job, intended to improve on inefficiencies rather than displace workers. Thus, the number of retail jobs may stabilize in the future. This is good news for Los Angeles which has a relatively concentrated retail sector.
