Daytime population increases dramatically in the CBDs: 6 times more workers than residents

It’s no surprise that there are more people moving through the skyways and sidewalks in downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul during weekday work hours. Collectively, the CBD daytime populations increase by nearly 200,000 people every Monday through Friday. The St. Paul CBD sees the largest jump, with a 7.4x increase in people every weekday. The worker to resident ratio in the Minneapolis CBD is 5.6.

Naturally, the ratio of 9-to-5 workers to residents is flipped in suburban submarkets. The Southwest and West have relatively strong employment levels due to a high concentration of large employers. In the Southeast and Northwest, daytime population is halved, indicative of many more homes than businesses.
