Women-owned businesses surge in the Sunshine State

Among the nation’s 15 most populous states, women-owned businesses in Florida grew the fastest, increasing over 67.0 percent between 2007 and 2016. This was closely followed by two other pro-business states - Georgia and Texas. All three states grew much faster than the national average of 45.2 percent.

On metro level, Florida particularly shined. Women-owned businesses in South Florida grew an incredible 94.7 percent during that period, while Orlando saw an exceptional 83.5 percent increase. Among the nation’s top 50 MSAs, only Memphis (122.2%), Detroit (121.4%) and Charlotte (105.4%) outpaced those Florida metros. Miami is now home to the 3rd most WOBs.

Given migratory trends, cost of living, and overall economic and business climate, it should come as no surprise that four of the top five metro areas for women-owned business growth are located in the Southeast.
