GICS validates the importance of real estate in today’s public equity markets, making it a standalone sector. What will the impact be on real estate investment?

The Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS), used by investment professionals to classify and analyze public companies and securities, has historically lumped real estate securities into the financials sector alongside banks, diversified financials and insurance in its key indices.

Effective September 2016, real estate broke into its own sector, now including equity real estate investment trusts (REITs) and real estate management and development companies. The promotion of real estate to its own headline is an affirmation of the increasing size and importance of the industry in today’s public equity markets and is expected to have a broad impact on real estate securities and portfolio planning.
