Report | Economic insight for October 16, 2017

Summary

Although they won't be permanent, the hurricane-related distortions in economic data are making it difficult to analyze underlying trends. This adds to uncertainty in the economy at a time when there is no shortage of uncertainty. The weather's been artificially boosting recent releases for sales and inflation while the underlying trends remain firm, but not as strong as the data seem to indicate. None of this appears to be able to deter the Fed from hiking rates once more in December. Although inflation continues to fall below the Fed's target, the Fed's intentions are clear. Political uncertainty, a more durable feature of the economy, will only help to complicate and muddle the outlook. This presents both a challenge and an opportunity for those within the commercial real estate sector.
