Report | Metro St. Louis Employment Update - January 2016

Summary

St. Louis's unemployment rate fell to 4.6 percent in 2015, which was nearly a full point drop from its 2014 mark of 5.6 percent. The education, utility and hospitality sectors saw the biggest job gains throughout the course of the year, helping the local unemployment rate dip below the overall U.S. unemployment rate of 5.0 percent.

Growth from technology-based companies like LockerDome, ThrottleNet and Vectra is expected to add jobs across the St. Louis area over the next couple years, although we expect to see some temporary contraction from a number of layoffs at U.S. Steel's Granite City location.
