Report | United States Employment Update - March 2013

Summary

February posted national employment growth of 236,000 jobs, double the previous month’s figure and above last year’s monthly average. Unemployment fell by 20 basis points to 7.7 percent, tying it with November 2012 for the lowest rate yet during the recovery. Notable is the continued growth of professional and business services, health care and leisure and hospitality, while office-using sectors added a combined 100,000 jobs to the national economy. The public sector cut 21,000 jobs in February alone as finances continue to put a strain on budgets; the private sector has added over four million jobs in the past two years. In the short term, highly skilled employment in tech, the health sector and management will continue to provide a significant portion of future employment gains.
