Report | Slow path to recovery for commercial real estate as Atlanta builds new foundation

Summary

Even three years removed from the so-called “Great Recession”, the Atlanta economy is still weak and its payrolls are shrinking. Job losses have dragged commercial real estate vacancy to painful highs. Sadly, the steady stream of bad economic news shows little indication of subsiding, as the forces that led to our economic collapse have not been dealt with. Because the bursting of the real estate bubble decimated Atlanta’s labor market and the balance sheets of so many homeowners, recovery will not be swift. Still more struggles are expected in the years to come before a rising tide lifts all boats. But even through the hard times, there will be pockets of growth as the economic geography and demographics of Atlanta realign.
