​Current responsibilities
Thomas Doughty serves as the Chairman of JLL’s Law Firm Group.

During his 24-year commercial real estate career, Thomas has been responsible for lease and purchase acquisitions, relocations and renegotiations on behalf of a number of law firms and corporations across the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Major representative assignments over the last few years have included:

  • SNR Denton LLP: Have represented this Chicago-based law firm with since it opened its Washington, DC office in 1986. Represented the firm in a renewal and expansion into a 140,000 square-foot leasehold in downtown Washington, as well as in the opening of a new office in Boston, MA. Recently represented the firm in the acquisition of new offices in Brussels, Belgium, Phoenix, Charlotte, Walnut Creek, and Dallas.

  • Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP: Currently serve as global advisor to this international law firm. In the past 12 months have completed a 30,000 SF renewal in Irvine California; a 25,000 SF relocation in Boston, Massachusetts; a 75,000 SF expansion and renewal in Palo Alto, California, a 50,000 SF expansion and renewal in Princeton, New Jersey, a 30,000 SF renewal in Dallas and a 153,000 SF renewal and expansion in San Francisco. Currently representing the firm with requirements in Los Angeles, Dallas, New York City and Philadelphia.

  • Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP: Currently representing this firm with a 400,000 square foot requirement in Washington, DC.

  • Baker & McKenzie LLP: Represented this Chicago based firm in the relocation/expansion of its 250,000 square-foot Chicago headquarters offices.

  • White & Case LLP: In 1995, negotiated a 70,000 square-foot lease on behalf of this New York law firm. In 2004 represented White & Case in the acquisition of a 140,000 square foot leasehold in Washington, DC. Currently representing the firm in the evaluation of their 500,000 SF New York City office.

  • Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP: Have represented this Philadelphia-based firm with Washington, DC requirements since 1989. Most recent assignment has involved the acquisition of a 107,000 square-foot leasehold, and the sublease disposition of 45,000 square feet.

  • Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP: Represented this LA-based law firm in the relocation/expansion of its San Francisco office. Currently representing the firm with its London office requirements.

  • O’Melveny & Myers LLP: Negotiated a 90,000 square-footexpansion and lease renewal for this Los Angeles firm in 1999. Subsequently, acquired an 11,000 square-foot leasehold in Tysons Corner, Virginia. Concluded a 184,000 square-foot leasehold acquisition in Washington, DC. Most recently represented the firm in the acquisition of 58,000 square feet expansion space for its New York offices.

  • Dow Lohnes PLLC: Represented this firm in a 147,000 square foot expansion and renewal in Washington, DC.

  • Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP: Have represented this Washington-based firm with requirements in excess of 225,000 square feet in Northern Virginia, London, England, Chicago, and most recently in New York City.

  • Sughrue Mion, PLLC: In 2005, represented this intellectual property law firm with the expansion into a 105,000 square foot lease in Washington, DC.

  • DLA Piper: Represented this firm with a 75,000 square foot lease acquisition at 30 Arch Street in downtown Boston, Massachusetts.

  • Fannie Mae: Served as Fannie Mae’s advisor from 1990-2005. In 1993, negotiated an 88,000 square-foot lease in Washington, DC. In 1994 and 1995 negotiated the purchase of two buildings in Herndon, Virginia totaling 375,000 square feet. Acquired a 200,000 square-foot building in Northwest Washington, DC in 1998. In 2000, completed an overall portfolio analysis resulting in the acquisition of a 230,000 square-foot leasehold in Herndon, Virginia, and an 80,000 square-foot data center in Reston, Virginia. In 2002, represented Fannie Mae in the acquisition of an 850,000 square-foot campus in Virginia. In 2003, acquired a 700,000 square foot site for future data center in Urbana, Maryland and acquired a 100,000 square-foot leasehold in Bethesda, MD. Subsequently represented Fannie Mae in negotiations for the acquisition of a 1,500,000 square-foot campus build-to-suit in southwest Washington, DC.

  • Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation: In 2004, negotiated a 389,000 square foot leasehold expansion and extension for the Washington, DC headquarters of this federally created pension insurer. In 2005, represented PBGC in acquiring additional 75,000 square foot leasehold in Washington, DC.

Thomas joined JLL in January of 2006 via the merger of Spaulding & Slye and JLL. Prior to joining Spaulding & Slye, he was a Senior Vice President of the brokerage division with Barnes, Morris, Pardoe & Foster.

He began his career as a litigator at the law firm of Parsons, Steffen & Moore in Norfolk, Virginia.

In 1975, Thomas was appointed as a Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and served in New York, San Francisco, and at FBI headquarters in Washington, DC.

His headquarters service included several appointments as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney in various federal judicial districts. During his FBI service, Thomas received numerous merit awards and a personal commendation by the Director.
