Retail Reinvention at Harrisburg Mall

Harrisburg Mall Management has a unique addition to the mall’s shopping experience.

ATLANTA, Nov. 7, 2010 – Jones Lang LaSalle has brought adaptive reuse to a whole new level at Harrisburg Mall with the addition of Broadway Classics Productions, a local playhouse theater company.  Located in a former anchor store situated off of Center Court, Broadway Classics Productions opened on Friday, November 19 with a live performance of the original production, “The Gift of Love”.

“The inaugural season is gearing up to be a huge success.  Show producers are planning several other shows after the holiday season,” said Theater Director Jim Moyer.  He describes the playhouse as an “exciting experience for people of all ages, with Broadway pizzazz and appeal”. Moyer expects 200 to 300 people per show, with three to four shows per week.

In addition to benefitting from foot traffic to the theater, Harrisburg Mall also receives a percentage of each ticket sold. The tenant has teamed up with other retailers in the mall to offer special discounts to patrons and is also establishing a youth program to generate interest in the arts among students.  The theater set, which cost nearly $50,000 to build, was created by Tom Viani, who has designed sets for Universal Studios and Disney. The 11-member professional cast features actors who have performed at the Sight and Sound theaters in Lancaster County.

“Jones Lang LaSalle continues to push the envelope in what is considered ‘traditional retail’,” said Jennifer Adams, Specialty Leasing Director, Jones Lang LaSalle Retail.  “Shopping centers constantly evolve to meet consumers’ needs and a tenant like Broadway Theater is a perfect example of how shopping centers continue to reinvent themselves with adaptive reuse.”
