Jones Lang LaSalle Completes Apollo Theater’s New Walk of Fame Project

Firm served as project manager for decorative sidewalk outside theater designed to hold plaques honoring 63 people

NEW YORK, May 14, 2010 — Jones Lang LaSalle has installed the Apollo Theater’s Walk of Fame commemorative project. The decorative sidewalk features plaques dedicated to a select group of entertainers, and other famous individuals and acts, that have performed at the landmark theater.

The Walk of Fame was constructed on the sidewalk outside the theater, starting directly beneath its historic marquee. The Apollo Theater recently installed the first plaques for a ribbon-cutting ceremony in May for the initial launch of the commemorative effort and plans to induct one or two people a year into the Walk of Fame. The Walk of Fame will have spaces for up to 63 plaques, with removable decorative stones covering the unassigned spots.

The Jones Lang LaSalle project team was led by Randy Apfelbaum, vice president with the firm’s Project and Development Services group in the New York office. Beyer Blinder Bell served as architect on the project, with 212 Associates providing graphic design services.

“This was an important endeavor for the Apollo Theater and the surrounding neighborhood,” said Apfelbaum. “Some of the most important entertainers and community leaders in the United States have performed at this historic venue. The Apollo Theater took an extremely active role in reaching out to the community and the various constituencies to develop support for this commemorative effort.”

Jones Lang LaSalle has been consulting with the leadership of the Apollo Theater on the Walk of Fame for more than a year and a half and on various other projects at the theatre for over eight years. The firm’s PDS team has been spearheading the approval process, attending municipal and local community meetings, and engaging the city of New York’s Department of Transportation and the Public Design Commission.

Although the Apollo Theater itself is landmarked, the sidewalk outside of the historic venue is not. Jones Lang LaSalle consulted with the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission to ensure the work being done on the project outside the facility would not endanger the theater or its landmark status.
