Jones Lang LaSalle Hires Healthcare Industry Expert Charles Maggio

Maggio to expand firm’s healthcare business, integrate healthcare real estate groups into single practice

NEW YORK, March 10, 2010 — Jones Lang LaSalle’s Project and Development Services Group in New York has hired Charles Maggio, senior vice president and national director, to lead its Healthcare Specialty Practice in the tri-state area. Maggio will be based out of the firm's New York office and will be responsible for integrating Jones Lang LaSalle’s various healthcare-related business units into a single practice, along with managing the firm’s healthcare clients, and overseeing individual healthcare projects and project teams. He reports to George Ladyman, managing director, who heads the PDS group for Jones Lang LaSalle throughout the Northeast.

“Charles Maggio is a lifelong healthcare executive who understands the business of healthcare facilities,” said Ladyman. “He is one of a handful of people with the expertise to guide clients who have found themselves at the intersection of healthcare and real estate. His ability to integrate healthcare with real estate will be crucial as Jones Lang LaSalle’s Healthcare Specialty Practice matures and continues to expand.”

Maggio, 47, has 27 years of experience including more than 20 years in the healthcare industry, specializing in healthcare design, construction and management with a focus on planning, client relations, user satisfaction and total project management. He has 13 years of experience as a practicing architect and 14 years of experience as hospital facilities executive and project management consultant.

“Healthcare systems’ operating margins are being compressed due to significant pressure from declining reimbursement, reduced ‘elective’ healthcare spending, reduced investment income and philanthropy as well as rising interest rates on debt,” said Maggio. “As a result, healthcare facilities need integrated strategic real estate planning and development that supports the healthcare system’s business objectives.”

As co-chair of the state of New York’s Construction Standards Advisory Group, Maggio recently co-authored proposed revisions to the New York State Department of Health Construction Code. He is also a member of the Health Guidelines Revision Committee of the Federal Guidelines Institute, which is working on the upcoming “2014 Guidelines for Design and Construction of Healthcare Facilities.” Maggio has extensive experience with Federal Housing Authority-insured loans, which are crucial to the financing of construction projects for healthcare facilities with low credit ratings.

Prior to joining Jones Lang LaSalle, Maggio served as director of project management for the New York region for Granary Associates. He joined the firm in 1998 as a project executive. Earlier, he was director of major modernization and special projects for Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center. Maggio also worked with a number of New York-area architectural firms, serving in various positions as a health care planner and architect.

Maggio received his bachelor’s degrees in architecture from the City College of New York. He is a registered architect in the states of New York and New Jersey, and has been certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. Maggio is a member of the American Institute of Architects’ Committee for Health Facilities, the American Society for Healthcare Engineering of the American Hospital Association, the National Fire Protection Association, the New York Society for Health Planning and the New York City Building Congress. Maggio serves as co-chairman of the Diagnostic & Treatment Sub-Committee of the state of New York’s Department of Health Construction Standards Advisory Group.
